Bong Slide Sizes: The Complete Joint Size Guide

Bong slide sizes come in three standards: 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. The number refers to the diameter of the ground glass joint where the slide meets the bong. A 14mm slide only fits a 14mm joint. Match both the size and the gender of your joint, and any replacement bowl will seal airtight.

The most common sizing mistake is buying an 18mm slide for a 14mm joint. It looks close in photos, but it will not seal. This guide shows you how to identify your size in under a minute, even without a ruler.

What Are Bong Slide Sizes? (The 3 Standards)

Bong slide sizes are the three standard ground glass joint diameters: 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm. Every slide, bowl, downstem, and ash catcher follows the same system, so a 14mm bowl from one brand fits a 14mm joint from any other brand.

These joints use a Ground on Glass (GonG) fitting. GonG means the glass taper is precision-ground with a frosted finish, which creates an airtight seal without rubber grommets. Quality slides are made from borosilicate glass, a material built to handle rapid temperature changes without cracking.

Slides differ from downstems and bangers, their sibling parts. The slide holds dry herb. The downstem carries smoke into the water. A banger is the concentrate version for dab rigs. All three follow the same joint size rules.

10mm Joints: Small and Precise

A 10mm joint is the smallest standard size. You will find it on mini bongs, small dab rigs, bubblers, and travel pieces, usually under 8 inches tall. The opening is about the width of a pencil eraser. Smaller joints restrict airflow slightly, which suits quick solo sessions and flavor-focused pulls rather than big rips.

14mm Joints: The Most Common Size

A 14mm joint is the most common bong joint size. Most bongs between 8 and 16 inches tall are used, and it is the best-stocked slide size in our collection. It is also the size our customers reorder most, because one 14mm bowl fits the widest range of pieces. If you are guessing blind, guess 14mm. Sometimes it is labeled 14.5mm; that is the same joint.

18mm Joints: Built for Bigger Rips

An 18mm joint is the largest standard size. Big beakers, straight tubes, and thick glass pieces over 16 inches tall usually run 18mm joints for maximum airflow. The wider opening lets more air move with less drag, so the chamber clears faster. The opening is close to the width of a US penny. You may also see it labeled 18.8mm; same size, different label.

Male vs. Female Bong Joints: What's the Difference?

A male joint tapers outward like a peg. A female joint is hollow and tapers inward to receive it. Opposites connect: a male slide fits into a female joint, and a female slide fits over a male joint.

Most bongs have a female joint, which is why most replacement bowls are male. Look at your bong with the slide removed. If the joint is an open socket, it is female and needs a male slide. If it is a solid post sticking up, it is male and needs a female slide. Gender matters as much as diameter. A 14mm male slide will never seal on a 14mm male joint.

Once you know the gender, the last step is confirming the diameter.

How to Measure Your Bong Joint Size (Step by Step)

How to Measure Your Bong Joint Size (Step by Step)

To measure your bong joint, measure the widest point of the opening (female) or the tip of the taper (male). Here is the fastest method:

  1. Remove the slide and downstem from your bong.
  2. Hold a ruler flat across the joint opening.
  3. Read the inside width: about 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm. A reading between 13.5mm and 14.5mm means a 14mm joint.
  4. Confirm the fit: a correctly sized male slide drops into a female joint and sits snug with no wobble.

The Coin Method (No Ruler Needed)

The coin method uses a US dime to check bong joint size without any tools. A dime is 17.9mm wide. Drop it flat over your female joint opening. If the dime falls into the joint, you have an 18mm joint. If it rests on top without falling in, you have a 14mm or 10mm joint. In our experience, this is the most reliable no-tool check, and a pencil eraser next to the opening separates 10mm from 14mm at a glance.

Know your size and gender? Now match it to your bong type.

Which Bong Slide Size Do You Need? (Size by Bong Type)

Your bong's height predicts its joint size. Small pieces run 10mm, mid-size pieces run 14mm, and tall or thick pieces run 18mm. Use this chart, then confirm with the dime test.

Joint Size

Typical Bong Type

Typical Height

Airflow Level

10mm

Mini bongs, small rigs, bubblers

Under 8 inches

Light, flavor-focused

14mm

Beakers, mid-size straight tubes

8 to 16 inches

Balanced, everyday

18mm

Large beakers, thick scientific tubes

Over 16 inches

Wide open, big clears

Bowl capacity depends on shape as much as joint size. Deep funnel bowls hold about 0.5 to 1.0 grams, while shallow slide bowls hold about 0.2 to 0.5 grams. Silicone pieces follow the same 14mm and 18mm glass standards, so silicone bongs with their own joint standards with confidence.

If your bowl and bong do not match, an adapter converts between sizes: 18mm to 14mm, or 10mm to 14mm in either direction. Once you know your size, pick from replacement bong slides and bowls in every diameter, gender, and style, or start fresh with the full range of bongs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bong Slide Sizes

What size bowl fits my bong?

Most bongs use a 14mm female joint, which takes a 14mm male bowl. Confirm with a ruler or the dime test before you order.

How do I know if my bong joint is male or female?

A male joint tapers outward like a solid peg. A female joint is a hollow socket that receives the slide.

Do all bong bowls fit all bongs?

No. A bowl must match both the joint diameter (10mm, 14mm, or 18mm) and the opposite gender of your bong's joint.

What is the most common bong joint size?

14mm is the most common bong joint size. It appears on most water pipes between 8 and 16 inches tall.

How do I measure my bong joint without a ruler?

Use a US dime (17.9mm wide). If it drops into your female joint, it is 18mm. If it sits on top, it is 14mm or smaller.

Can I use a 14mm slide in an 18mm bong?

No, a 14mm slide will not seal in an 18mm joint without an 18mm to 14mm adapter. Keep your slide clean, too.
